4-Day Lake Nakuru- Masai Mara Safari
This is an exciting Safari that offers you the chance to visit the exceptional Lake Nakuru and Masai Mara National Parks. Considered among the most premium wildlife destinations in Kenya, these parks give you wildlife experiences like nowhere else in the world.
In addition to these, Kenya is home to other national parks that offer captivating landscapes, rich biodiversity, and a network of experiences for visitors to enjoy.
Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru National Park is a world-renowned destination for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers. Located in the Great Rift Valley, the park is home to over 50 mammal species, including the endangered black and white rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffe, and African wild dog. The park’s diverse landscape, which includes woodlands, grasslands, and rocky escarpments, provides a unique habitat for a wide range of wildlife.
The park is also famous for its incredible birdlife, with over 400 species recorded, including the lesser and greater flamingos, pelicans, and eagles. The lake’s alkaline waters attract a vast array of bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Visitors can explore the park’s scenic beauty and diverse wildlife through guided game drives, hiking, and birdwatching tours.
Lake Nakuru
On one hand, Lake Nakuru is famous globally for the thousands of flamingos, including lesser flamingos, that line its shores. The abundance of algae attracts a vast number of flamingos that famously give the lake a pinky plumage. The rich bird life at Lake Nakuru includes over 400 bird species, making it a thrilling destination for bird watchers and those looking for an African wild safari adventure. Furthermore, the Park is connected to Lake Soysambu Conservancy along the southeastern border, representing the only remaining wildlife corridor to Lake Naivasha.
Wildlife
One unique factor of Lake Nakuru National park is the high concentration of diverse wildlife species. The park is home to thousands of African iconic animals including white and black Rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffe, hippopotamus, warthogs, baboons, waterbuck, and buffalos. You will enjoy hunting escapades from the park’s resident lions, cheetahs and leopards.
Masai Mara
On the other hand, the national reserve is reputed worldwide for the annual wildebeest migrations. From July every year, over 1.5 million wildebeest, antelopes and zebra arrive in Kenya from Serengeti National Park. The wildebeest must survive the crocodile-infested Mara River to reach the fertile plains of Masai Mara. In December, the animals wander back to Serengeti National Park in preparation for the calving season which comes in February. This multi-species migration is one of the world’s natural wonders.
Intriguingly, Mara’s lives are a true reflection of the circle of life. The Wildebeest migration shapes the lives of most other species in the Masai Mara. Their arrival marks a time of feasting and prosperity for the reserve predators.
Wildlife
The Masai Mara hosts a high number of African games including lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, buffalo (Big Five), giraffe, ostrich, hyena, and impala, among others. The open savannah makes excellent game drives as animals can easily be seen in their natural habitat.
Masai Mara National Reserve
The Masai Mara National Reserve is one of Africa’s most famous wildlife reserves, located in southwestern Kenya. The reserve is known for its abundant wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo), as well as cheetahs, hyenas, and giraffes. The reserve’s diverse landscape, which includes grasslands, woodlands, and rocky outcrops, provides a unique habitat for a wide range of wildlife.
The Masai Mara is also famous for its annual wildebeest migration, which takes place between July and October. During this time, millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles migrate from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in search of greener pastures. Visitors can experience the thrill of witnessing this natural wonder through guided game drives and safari tours.
Wildlife Viewing
Lake Nakuru National Park is a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise, offering some of the most spectacular wildlife viewing opportunities in East Africa. The park is home to over 50 mammal species, including the rare and majestic Rothschild’s giraffe, as well as the critically endangered black and white rhinos. These magnificent creatures roam freely across the park’s diverse landscapes, providing visitors with unforgettable sightings.
The park’s varied terrain, which includes acacia forests, cascading waterfalls, dense woodlands, and unique euphorbia trees, creates a rich habitat for a wide range of wildlife. Visitors can expect to encounter big cats such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs, as well as other predators like hyenas, serval cats, and jackals. Smaller carnivores, including civets, genets, and mongooses, also thrive in this vibrant ecosystem.
In addition to its impressive mammal population, Lake Nakuru National Park is renowned for its birdlife. With over 500 bird species recorded, the park is a haven for birdwatchers. The shores of Lake Nakuru are often adorned with flocks of Greater and Lesser pink flamingos, creating a stunning spectacle of color. Other avian residents include cormorants, kingfishers, ostriches, pelicans, geese, storks, and a variety of raptors such as eagles and herons. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or a casual observer, the park’s avian diversity is sure to leave you in awe.
