Serengeti, meaning “endless plains” in Kiswahili, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a 6,900-square-mile (18,000-square-kilometer) park in Tanzania, bordering Kenya’s Masai Mara. This park is home to over 2 million large animals, including over a million wildebeest, hundreds of thousands of plains zebras, and Thomson’s gazelles. These strive to survive the onslaught by large predators including lions, cheetahs, and hyenas. Many smaller animals, such as rock hyrax and monkeys, and over 500 bird species also call this area home.
This is a protected wildlife conservancy and a World Heritage Site. The area is named after the Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera located within it.
